Badal Hajj (Proxy Hajj) is the performance of Hajj on behalf of someone who is unable to fulfill the pilgrimage themselves due to chronic illness, old age, or death. This noble act carries immense reward and is permissible under Islamic law.
Niyyah (Intention)
Make a clear intention to perform Hajj on behalf of the individual. Example:
“Allahumma labbayka ḥajjan ʿan [name]”
Appointing a Proxy
Choose a trustworthy Muslim who has already completed Hajj.
Legal and Islamic Documentation
Provide the full name and details of the person for whom Hajj is being done.
If deceased, death certificate may be required.
Logistics
Arrange travel, accommodation, and other essentials for the proxy.
Completion
After completion, the reward is attributed to the person on whose behalf it was performed.
Upon reaching Miqat:
“Labbayka ḥajjan ʿan fulān (name)”
Translation: “Here I am, O Allah, for Hajj on behalf of [name].”
Badal Hajj reflects the mercy and inclusivity of Islam. It is an act of deep compassion and reward for both the doer and the one for whom it is performed.
